Engineers who want to invest in a quality-related credential often face the same three-way decision: the ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), the ASQ Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE), or a Six Sigma belt. They overlap enough to cause confusion but serve genuinely different goals. This article compares them so you can choose the one that fits your role and ambitions.

The CQE: quality breadth
The CQE is the comprehensive quality-engineering credential. Its Body of Knowledge spans quality management systems, product and process design, process control (SPC, sampling), continuous improvement, quantitative methods, and risk management. The CRE: reliability depth
The CRE is a specialist credential focused on the behavior of products and systems over time. Its Body of Knowledge is heavy on probability and statistics for reliability, life-data (Weibull) analysis, reliability modeling and prediction, testing, and maintainability. If your work involves predicting product life, running accelerated life tests, or designing for reliability, the CRE aligns most directly.
Six Sigma: process improvement
Six Sigma certifications center on reducing variation and defects in processes through the DMAIC framework—Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control. The emphasis is on leading improvement projects, applying statistical tools to process data, and delivering measurable savings. Six Sigma fits engineers who lead improvement initiatives and want a project-leadership credential.

Can I hold more than one of these certifications?+
Absolutely, and many senior quality professionals do. The CQE gives breadth, the CRE gives reliability depth, and Six Sigma adds process-improvement leadership. Most engineers start with the one closest to their current role and add others as their career broadens.
Is the CRE harder than the CQE?+
